Ultimate Match (video component)
60-second commercial spot
In collaboration with Jeff Jenkins
What kind of politics do our desires betray? Do they flatten societal hierarchies or rather reify them, accepting them pillars as in our intimate architectures? Using the TV commercial as a format, Ultimate Match reads as an advertisement for a dating service whose goal is to help Asian women to find their “ultimate match”–in this case, white men who bring the benefits bestowed upon their demographic with them. Playing off the idea that most people have a “type”, Ultimate Match proposes an acceptance of mutual fetishization between individuals from different backgrounds, especially when their partnership has the potential increase the couple’s social, economic, and cultural standing within society. Funded by the fictitious Lighten Up Foundation, whose goal is to “spread diversity through whiteness”, Ultimate Match is simultaneous a practical proposal and an interrogation of the principals behind it.
