On Thursday, February 27, 2020, from 7–9 PM, Kim Ye takes part in a panel discussion at The Public School Los Angeles, a collectively-run, experimental space located in LA’s Chinatown. Sex Work in the Academy and the Art World, brings together a group of artists, sex workers, and organizers to discuss the complex overlaps between creative practice, intellectual labor, and sex work and explores how sex-working artists are reshaping public discourse, disrupting institutional norms, and forging alternative pathways to visibility, care, and collective empowerment within and beyond the art world.
Moderated by Public School organizing committee member Maya Gonzalez, the panel included Stevie Cisneros Hanley, a Chicago-based artist and sex worker whose work was concurrently featured in the group exhibition Psychic Plumbing at Canary gallery; Wanbli Gamache, a new media performance artist whose ritualized work addresses intimacy, eroticism, and authorship; and Karina Vahitova, a Ukrainian-born artist and co-founder of Void Academy, who formerly served as the associate director of communications at the Marina Abramović Institute. This event was featured in Hyperallergic, which highlighted it in their February 2020 event listings.
